Volunteer Policy

Founder’s Comments

The Earth has changed due to human actions, and nature is accelerating those changes.  If we and the many others working on this problem cannot reestablish the equilibrium that we had in the past, the Earth that we end up with may not support human life.

Literally, your future and that of future generations depend on our success in addressing this problem.  You will be working on the most important problem that the world has ever faced.

We will be attacking this problem on many fronts, so we will need scientists, entrepreneurs, business managers, sales and marketing people, people with advertising and social media skills, political influencers, and many others.

Whether you are a student, a professional in mid-career or a retiree, there is work for you to do.  The problem is global, so we will need volunteers from every corner of the Earth.

Here is a description of what we will try to provide for you as a volunteer:

• A project to work on with a team leader and a team to support you. 
• A mission to accomplish and information to get you started.
• An understanding of where your role fits in the larger effort.
• An opportunity for more responsibility when you are ready for it.

In addition to the satisfaction, you should experience from your work on this important project, we hope you will enjoy the camaraderie of working on a team with other likeminded volunteers.

You should also be aware that the world will be changing over the next decade as the economy and society change in response to the fight against climate change.  As a participant of this effort, you will likely be on the cutting edge of these changes.  New companies will spring up, and some older ones may not survive.  There will be many opportunities.

Army of Volunteers for Earth (AofV), as a nonprofit, will probably not be able to pay you a salary or commissions.  However, your career may benefit greatly from what you learn and the skills you acquire and also from the individuals and companies you meet from your
participation in this project.

Whether you benefit financially or not, we will do our best to make your participation an adventure for you.

What we would like you to do as a volunteer:

1. Meet your commitments, if possible: Most of our volunteers will have full lives with school, jobs, families, children and other important aspects of their lives. But, if you promise to do something but can’t, let us know, so we can make other plans.

2. Help someone when you have the chance: It will give you satisfaction, and you may have an ally when you need one.

3. Be curious: If something in your work area doesn’t make sense, speak up and ask why. You will learn something and/or you will have pointed out a weakness in our strategy.

4. Build a network: Your success in your career is often more dependent on those you can recruit to help you with problems than on your own ability.

5. Learn to work in a team. In your role as an AofV volunteer, you will likely be working in a team with other people. A well-functioning team can accomplish much more than individual members by themselves.

6. Don’t neglect your personal life. Few people on their deathbed say “I wish I had spent more time at the office.” Love, travel, have dreams and live them.

7. Don’t discriminate against or harass other volunteers or partners: We don’t expect any problems in this area, but we mention it for completeness. We will have a wonderfully diverse group of members and volunteers from many countries in the world, with different religions, ages, sexual orientations and other characteristics. I find it exciting to be building the diverse team of volunteers that we will have. None of you should experience any discrimination or harassment, but if you do, you can contact:

8. Be careful of the information you receive. In general, we want to share our knowledge with all who could benefit from it. However, there are some exceptions.  We don’t share information when it could hurt someone.  For example:

• We don’t share personal information that someone gives us inconfidence.
• We don’t share information on our members or donors.
• We don’t give information about a company’s activities to their competitors.
• We don’t share information that the person who gave it to you would not want to be made public. If in doubt, ask them.

If you have suggestions on how we can improve our policies or anything else in our organization, please feel free to contact me at any time.  Also, if you ever need advice of any kind, I may be able to offer some ideas.  In my mid-eighties, I may not yet be wise, but I’ve been an entrepreneur most of my career, and I’ve learned some things along the way. If I can help you, I will.

Finally, a word about safety and liability:

Most of your work will probably be remote, over the Internet or by phone.  We don’t want you to do anything that is not safe.

However, on occasion, you may want to leave your home or office to meet someone face to face or to do another errand.

In that case you need to be responsible for your own safety and the safety of others, since AofV cannot know your local details or take responsibility for them.

We ask that, if you agree to work as a volunteer for AofV, you agree that you will not hold AofV, it’s director, officers, volunteers or any other person associated with AofV responsible for injuries to yourself or others as a result of your work for AofV.
